We are committed to ensuring the preservation and protection of elephants.
The Elephant Aware project was found in 2008 during the onset of a catastrophic poaching crisis which saw thousands of elephants killed for their ivory tusks across Africa. The poaching was equally detrimental to the Mara elephant population and the Elephant Aware team worked for years to tackle this issue until finally, in collaboration with our partners and the wildlife authorities, the poaching was brought to a halt. Kenya is one of the few countries today which have managed to eradicate poaching because of the good work of many conservation groups working on the ground to protect elephants, like Elephant Aware.
What We Do
Community Outreach
An important focus of the work of Elephant Aware is mitigation of human-elephant conflict. A mutual form of respect has existed between the Maasai and the Elephant for centuries. In the past the Maasai people were nomadic, moving their herds every few weeks.
Animal Protection
Snares are indiscriminate killers of all animals, large and small. When an animal inadvertently walks into a wire trap, the mechanism tightens around their leg or trunk causing a slow, painful death . The rangers locate and remove snares and coordinate with veterinarian teams to treat severely injured animals.
The Oloropilé Fund
This fund was set up in February 2020 in Memory of a very special Elephant named Oloropilé who tragically lost his life in an incident of Human-Elephant-Conflict. The purpose of this fund is to provide support to families who have lost loved ones due to conflict cases between elephants and people and in so doing help protect both communities and elephants.
